Functional Exercise
Functional exercise is purposeful movement designed around what your body needs to do, not just how an exercise looks in a gym.
We use movement and exercise to build strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and control while gradually preparing your body for the activities that matter to you. That might mean getting up and down from the floor, lifting and carrying groceries, climbing stairs, getting the baby in and out of a car, reaching overhead, or keeping up with the demands of everyday life.
Your exercises are selected and progressed based on your current abilities, goals, and response to movement. As you improve, we adjust the challenge to continue building capacity while keeping the focus on what you’re working toward.
At Full Circle, exercise is not an afterthought. It’s part of helping you turn better movement into greater capacity, so the changes you make during your visits can carry over into real life.
What does the research say?
Research supports individualized exercise as an important part of care for chronic musculoskeletal pain. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 58 randomized controlled trials involving more than 10,000 people with chronic nonspecific low-back pain. The researchers found that individualized exercise can improve pain and disability, with benefits seen across different exercise approaches.
The findings also suggest that tailoring exercise to the individual can provide meaningful benefits compared with both other exercise programs and passive approaches. The authors noted that individualization is practical to implement and may be particularly useful when exercise is matched to the person's needs and goals.
At Full Circle, we put that principle into practice. Rather than prescribing the same exercises to everyone, we select and progress movement based on where you are now, what you need your body to do, and what you're working toward.
